Each decade brings new films that people eagerly await. I myself have spent many moments jumping up and down with anticipation over new films that I have heard about. Unfortunately, the anticipation does not always come about due to a good number of films that do not deliver on the promise that people will have for them. Here are 10 disappointments from the current decade, from 2010 to the present day.
10. The Green Lantern (2011)
10. The Green Lantern (2011)
Why Was I Excited at First?
- The Green Lantern had never been portrayed before in live action.
- The visuals looked impressive.
- I was intrigued by the idea of seeing Ryan Reynolds playing a superhero.
- The friend-turned-enemy relationship between Green Lantern and Sinestro was not really explored enough.
- They seemed to have spent more time and effort on the visual effects than on the story.
- Green Lantern's costume looked weird made out of pure energy rather than just being a rubber suit.
9. The Family (2013)
Why Was I Excited at First?
- Robert De Niro is a wonderful comic talent.
- I enjoy "fish out of water" stories where characters are out of their league in a land they are unfamiliar with.
- De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones are three of my favorite actors.
- Not only did the shootout at the end feel out of place, it also gave me the impression that the filmmakers could not decide whether they were making a funny mob movie or a serious one.
- There was not enough complication in the plot.
- The characters were not as fully developed as they could have been.
8. The Bourne Legacy (2012)
Why Was I Excited at First?
- The Bourne series is very action-packed and entertaining.
- Edward Norton and Stacy Keach were going to be cast members, and they worked well together in American History X.
- The idea of another character who went through the same scenario as Jason Bourne seemed interesting.
- The storyline was confusing.
- Edward Norton sounded robotic and did not really make much of an effective antagonist.
- Albert Finney and Joan Allen, who were both great in the previous films, were barely shown, even though the posters highlighted their names in big print underneath the title.
7. The Big Wedding (2013)
Why Was I Excited at First?
Why Was I Disappointed?
- Robert De Niro and Robin Williams were working again after their impressive collaboration in Awakenings.
- The cast consisted of some of my favorite actors.
- Writer/Director Justin Zackham wrote the funny and touching script for The Bucket List.
Why Was I Disappointed?
- The great cast was wasted on a poor script.
- Robert De Niro was not as energetic as he could have been.
- Diane Keaton and Susan Sarandon were too energetic to the point where their yelling made them both come off annoying.
6. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Why Was I Excited at First?
Why Was I Disappointed?
- An impressive ensemble cast was assembled.
- The set designs and costumes looked impressive as they recreated the early 20th Century.
- Watching Ralph Fiennes in the trailer reminded me a bit of the types of characters that Peter Sellers or John Cleese would portray.
Why Was I Disappointed?
- The storyline was very confusing to follow.
- While I like the casts and set designs of Wes Anderson's films, I usually find his humor a little too dry.
- Some of the cast members, such as Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Tom Wilkinson, were not really given as much to do as other actors.
5. Clash of the Titans (2010)
Why Was I Excited at First?
- I enjoy the cheesy but entertaining original film.
- Greek mythology is an area that interests me.
- Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes were working again after their brilliant collaboration in Schindler's List.
- The battle with Medusa is boring and not as suspenseful as in the original film.
- Some of the special effects look really cheap as if they did not put enough effort into it.
- The religious cult leader seems unnecessary and out of place in this kind of movie.
4. Noah (2014)
Why Was I Excited at First?
- Russell Crowe is, for the most part, a powerful onscreen presence.
- The story of Noah's Ark has always interested me.
- I kept re-watching the trailer because I loved the musical score being used for the background.
- The movie felt more like a three way cross between the Road Warrior, Water World and Transformers rather than an adaptation of a story from the Bible.
- The riveting musical score used in the trailer was not used in the movie.
- Instead of using real animals, the film used special effects that looked fake as can be.
3. The Three Stooges (2012)
Why Was I Excited at First?
- I am a huge fan of the Three Stooges.
- The film was being made by the Farrelly Brothers.
- Sean Hayes, from Will and Grace, and Will Sasso, from MADtv, are both very funny.
- Updating the Stooges to the modern day was stupid, especially since they are still wearing those old clothes that are more suited for the 1930s or 1940s.
- Also very idiotic was mixing the knuckleheads with the cast of Jersey Shore, who are all bad actors.
- One of my favorite trademarks of the Stooges, a pie fight, was not included in this movie at all.
2. Lincoln (2012)
Why Was I Excited at First?
- There are many interesting moments in the life of Abraham Lincoln to cover.
- Steven Spielberg was going to direct a cast that included Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.
- The recreation of the time period looked very impressive.
- The title and advertising misled me to believe the film was a biography of Lincoln when all it really covered was the last four months of his life.
- The screenplay spent too much time on the Thirteenth Amendment and did not feature enough about the Civil War or the relationships between Lincoln and his family members.
- Lincoln eventually felt more like a history lesson rather than a movie because of the endless amount of facts that were being presented about the Thirteenth Amendment.
1. The Interview (2014)
Why Was I Excited at First?
- Seth Rogen and James Franco are a great comedy team.
- I like political satires.
- The enormous amount of hype the movie received led me to expect something special.
- James Franco's attempts at playing an obnoxious character reached the point where he became embarrassing to watch.
- The film failed miserably to deliver on the expectations created by the hype.
- The humor consisted of cheap jokes created by writers who did not seem like they were the ambitious types who were trying to be creative.
